Rio, Summer 2016 - CHECK!

Today's Annoyance: People who focus on the empty half of the glass
Mantra of the Day: Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records. - William A. Ward

Don't be too bummed out that Chicago didn't win the bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. Look at it as an opportunity to travel to a cool, new place. A city that's famous for Carnival, the samba, rain forests, and white, sandy beaches like Copacabana and Ipanema has my name written all over it. I've had Brazil on my travel schedule for a while now but haven't taken the opportunity to check it out. A dear friend traveled there with her sister a few years ago and fell so madly in love with the country that they were in tears on their return flight. That's quite the testimonial!

Although I'm not a very athletic kind of girl, I absolutely love watching the Olympics. It's always so cool to cheer on the Americans in the various sports. Since London is one of my regular stomping grounds, I'm not sure that I'll go there for the 2012 festivities but, it's early. One never knows what may happen...

Mark your calendar for August 5 - 21, 2016! For more info on the big event, go to the official website.

Fashion Week Overload

Today's Annoyance: That I don't have a squadron of mini-me's to be in more than one place at a time
Mantra of the Day: "As I was saying, fashion means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. - Anna Wintour, Vogue Editor-in-Chief

Oh to be a fixture at Fashion Week, a la Madame Anna Wintour! Part of the problem - aside from a wide-open schedule and buckets filled with cash - is keeping up with so many international Fashion Weeks. How does a jet-setter-in-training do it, you ask? CosmoWorlds, that's how. This fab site features lists of international fashion weeks from 2006 through 2010. You can even search by country; then, you're just one click away from each event's official website.

As you might expect, the most important are the "big four":
NYC has been going strong since the 1940s. Dozens of major metro cities have started their own Fashion Weeks within the past ten years, such as Athens, Cape Town, Dubai and Los Angeles so, we have plenty of opportunities to enjoy the festivities, the food, the fun and the gossip (of course). Now, to decide which ones to attend...

Ava's Faves: International events and festivals

Today's Annoyance: Scheduling conflicts
Mantra of the Day: There are many reasons to be happy and grateful.

Every day is a reason to celebrate something. Pick any day of the year and I guarantee that you'll find a film festival, music festival, food festival, sports competition, awards show, fashion show, exhibit, dance, play, musical, carnival or parade of some kind. I find this intriguing, exciting and overwhelming at the same time because the odds are pretty high that I would like to attend many of these events.

Tops on my list of must-attend events are: the Dubai World Cup, the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, and the Malaysia International Fireworks competition.

To find a list of events going on around the world, go to Earth Calendar, Culturekiosque and WhatsOnWhen. I'll post other resources to find international social and cultural events soon. If you know of any great events or sites to find international events, let me know.

Party on!

Chicago Goes Modern

Today's Annoyance: Not having more time in Chicago
Mantra of the Day: Why leave the city when the world can come to you?

I was just in Chicago on a business trip entertaining clients and heard about the opening of the new Modern Wing of the Art Institute. Apparently, it has been years in the making so the city was eagerly awaiting this new attraction. The Art Institute is one of the premier art museums in the world and has an amazing permanent collection. But, now it has added modern/contemporary/avant garde works to the mix. It is definitely a hip and entertaining space that will hold your attention even if you are not an art buff.

There are also plans for beautiful high-end restaurant at the top of the modern wing of the museum. It overlooks Millennium Park and the adjoining gardens. It is truly an oasis in the middle of downtown Chicago. This is soon to be a must-see venue in Chicago in the months and years to come. If any of you has a chance to check it out, let me know what you think of it.

Art Basel

Today's Annoyance: Work, once again
Mantra of the Day: Art is the spice of life.

This is it, kids! This is the big jet set event of the year...or, at least, the closest one that I have found so far: Art Basel. One of my mini goals of 2009 is to make it to Art Basel and Art Basel Miami. For those of you who are new to the jet set scene (such as myself), this is the biggest art fair not only of the year, but also the biggest art event that takes place in the world. And, it's the 40-year anniversary! It looks like Basel, Switzerland is the next travel stop on the Ava Pierce World Tour!!

I am keeping my fingers crossed that I will be able to spend a nice chunk of time in Europe this summer, but that of course depends on how things work out at the office. Hopefully, I can either get away for a few stretches or work in a remote office or better yet, work from my laptop by the side of the pool with some beautiful scenery. But I digress...

Since Art Basel is such a huge international art event, it tends to attract a lot of movers and shakers who collect art, love art and want to be surrounded by beautiful things. I fall into the latter two categories. There is nothing quite like a pretty picture that makes you think and inspires you to challenge the limits of your everyday life. Just another idea for you jet setters in training!

The French Riviera in Spring

Today's Annoyance: Why don't I live in the French Riviera year-round?
Mantra of the Day: Summer is here and I am ready to see the world!

Spring is in full swing! There are many places in the world where one can enjoy the virtues of spring, but in my opinion, the best place to do that is in the French Riviera. This time of year, there is so much going on that just about anyone can fill up their social calendar without even trying.

A couple of weeks ago, there was the Cannes Film Festival. Even if you are not into the cinema, the Festival is worth the trip for some quality people-watching. The buzz of the city of Cannes during this time is incredible and like nothing that I have ever experienced before.

As you can imagine, I usually go to the Tribeca Film Festival every year. Although it is a wonderful event, it still cannot compare to the sheer glamour of Cannes.

Then, there is the Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo Tennis Masters Series. I am a girlie girl who is not super into sports, but these are sporting events that any girl or jet setter, for that matter, can get excited by. Lots of gorgeous, interesting people and the energy is incredible. Both the track and the tennis courts are arguably some of the most beautiful sporting arenas that you will ever see. I think that I will make it out there for at least part of the festivities this year, and I hope to see you there, too.

Pure Decadence

Today's Annoyance: That I'm not in France right now
Mantra of the Day: The glamorous life was made for me!

Yesterday, I mentioned the Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1 race. In celebration of the Grand Prix this year, there is a three-day event called the "Billionaire Club in Monte Carlo". I won't piss off my source by disclosing the dates and location; all I can say is that if you happen to know about this event, it would be worth it for a jet setter in training to check it out. The people of Monaco certainly know how to put on a party and this one sounds like a doozy, especially since it goes on for 3 DAYS! I haven't partied like that since college. I didn't know that you were still allowed to paint the town red like that after a certain age.

If you're in the south of France (or plan to go within the next day), you can send me an email for some details about the event (ava at avapierce dot com). By the way, I just love this not-so-little emerald...nice touch!!

It's Grand Prix time!

Today's Annoyance: Speed limits
Mantra of the Day: My other car is a Formula 1 race car.

It's that time of year again. Time for the Monaco Grand Prix. Oh...my...stars! I'm not sure that words can explain how fun an event this is. Long story short, I wanted to chuck my career in finance and become a race car driver. The sheer sound and feel of the engines revving as they race through the winding streets of Monaco is unbelievably cool.

Before experiencing the Grand Prix, in no way did I think I'd be a fan of racing. Since attending the test runs with a couple of girlfriends, I've become a true fan of Formula 1. Oh, and did I mention that quite a few of the race car drivers are HOT - Lewis Hamilton, anyone? Hel-lo! Definitely don't knock it 'til you try it. And, if nothing else, there are some way cool people who attend Grand Prix events; the rich and famous, the very handsome, the movers and shakers of business. Not a bad crowd to rub elbows with. So, break out your posh attire, buy some racing headphones and be ready for a career change!

Michael Jackson at O₂ Stadium

Today's Annoyance: That this could be MJ's last hurrah.
Mantra of the Day: His HIStory will live on.

I'm sure that you have heard by now that Michael Jackson is doing a series of concerts this summer in London that will most likely be the last time that he performs for his fans. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hopes up that he will sign some type of Celine-Dion-in-Vegas deal where we can all go see the King of Pop whenever we like, but there is a good chance that this could be it.

With the threat of finality looming on the horizon, I think that I should sneak away from the office for a long weekend to go see the King of Pop. It has long been one of those things that I wanted to do before I kick the bucket.

I have seen his shows on HBO and DVD and they seem like one of the most impressive shows that one can experience. As strange as the man might be, I still love his music. Plus, it is a good excuse to jet over to London. I am a jet setter in training after all. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!

Ava's Faves: Greenopia.com

Today's Annoyance: People who have no regard for our planet
Mantra of the Day:
I promise to be a greener citizen of planet Earth.

This is the 39th anniversary of Earth Day! How are you celebrating? I, for one, am planning to accessorize our planet…by planting some trees. Far more than I “need” a new pair of Harry Winston earrings, the Earth needs more trees. I’m also going to donate some money to Earth Day Network. Aside from this day’s activities, I have already switched to energy-saving light bulbs and I regularly recycle plastic, glass, newspapers and magazines.

I also found this cool website – Greenopia - that provides city guides for eco-friendly businesses and products. They also have a Green Glossary, product ratings, brand ratings, and tips for living a greener life. There’s no excuse not to do our best to protect our planet. Happy Earth Day!

Easter!

Today's Annoyance: That chocolate has calories
Mantra of the Day: There is nothing like fresh beginnings.

Another year has passed and the Easter Bunny is visiting us again. I absolutely love this time of year because it gives me every excuse to be a kid again without catching smack from my friends. Stocking the house with Reese's peanut butter cups, Cadbury eggs, and jellybeans is just the beginning. I go to my favorite florist and have stylish mini-Easter baskets made for my closest friends. Then, I take my ten-year-old niece Eliana on an egg hunt, which we follow up with high tea at the Four Seasons.

In reality, I think that the best part of the holiday is that it represents a new beginning. It is around this time of year that New Year's resolutions start to wear off. Maybe the year is not going as stellar as you planned, but you can mentally start over and take control of your current situation. I like to make Easter promises which usually consist of me resolving to treat myself better from here on out because it has a positive effect on all of those around me. This year, I have decided to carve out three hours of "Me" time each week to help maintain my sanity because life tends to move a little faster than I can handle.

Let me know what your Easter promises are - I can always use some fresh ideas!

Wedding Etiquette

Today's Annoyance: Awkward social situations
Mantra of the Day: Alcohol is not my friend.

My latest mini crisis is that I am invited to a wedding this weekend of two people who I don’t even know. One of my gay boyfriends needs a date to go to his ex-boyfriend’s nuptials who apparently turned straight after their relationship ended when he found God and decided he wanted a traditional family. Yeah, I know it’s a bit strange, but then again, it’s New York City and you see it all here. Point is, what is a girl to do when you are at a stranger’s wedding? Especially when it is your date’s ex and you are not romantically involved.

At first, I was hoping to just enjoy the free champagne and spend the night laughing at everyone else for either A) their lack of fashion sense or B) their inebriation. Then there is the question of what to wear. I must admit, that I have some stunning pieces in my wardrobe, but it is never in good taste to upstage the bride. After all, it is her day. I have no idea what she looks like or what type of bride she might be: hot or, well, not. On second thought, it probably isn’t proper etiquette to allow myself to be overserved then embarrass my date. There is a good chance that I could be the person who ends being laughed at after my sixth glass of bubbly and it suddenly seems socially acceptable to dance the lambada with the groom’s father.

So what is a girl to do to entertain herself while still being dignified? Please guys, I need help on this one. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's St. Patrick's Day...where's my pot of gold?!

Today's Annoyance: Lack of concentration
Mantra of the Day: I can resist everything except temptation. - Oscar Wilde

I've been so crazy busy that I forgot to wish you all a happy St. Patrick's Day. Hopefully, you were smart enough to wear something green to avoid getting pinched otherwise you've been getting pinched all day and now you're ready for a beer (or a six-pack).

I wonder if half the people celebrating even know what St. Patrick's Day is all about. I mean, a lot of us know about wearing green, eating corned beef and cabbage, heading out to the local bar for drinks and debauchery. Most of us are familiar with leprechauns, bagpipes, kilts and pots of gold but, I would guess that more than a few people have no idea why we celebrate every March 17. If you haven't a clue, History.com has a cool collection of info (that's if you're still sober enough to care).

Cheers!

Today is Barbie's 50th birthday!

Today's Annoyance: Plastic humans
Mantra of the Day:
I want to be Barbie. That bitch has everything. (license plate frame)

Barbie is 50 years old and looks as good as ever. Yes, that’s because she’s a doll. And she’s not doing too bad for herself – an enviable wardrobe of designer clothes and accessories, cars, boats, airplanes, houses, businesses and a hot boyfriend. (If I recall correctly, she and Ken never got married. Maybe he didn’t want to sign a pre-nup.) She has been a mermaid, a princess, a NASCAR fan, and a rock star.

She has even seen her fair share of controversy over the years. Loads of mad moms bitched about her “unrealistic” figure, her out-of-wedlock pregnancy, tattoos and an alleged S&M version (“Black Canary Barbie”), among other things.

I’m taking Barbie’s birthday as opportunity to pay homage to the real women who make 50 look good (with or without a little help): Angela Bassett, Holly Hunter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jennifer Tilly, Joan Jett, Jody Whatley, Marg Helgenberger, Madonna, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sade, Sharon Stone, and Ellen DeGeneres. Best wishes for a 50th year of life! I want to be you when I grow up!!

Celebrate International Women's Day

Today's Annoyance: People who take life and our freedoms for granted
Mantra of the Day: I'm grateful to the amazing women who came before me.

Today is International Women’s Day, which celebrates women’s economic, political and social achievements throughout history. In honor of this global celebration, my friends and I are going to get together for dinner and talk about the incredible women who have influenced our lives – mothers, sisters, mentors, celebrities, businesswomen, politicians, and social leaders.

Are you attending any IWD events or planning to do anything special? If you’re just getting into the loop, go to http://www.internationalwomensday.com/ for more information.

The Oscars

Today’s Annoyance: Visually challenged celebrity stylists
Mantra of the Day: Today is my Red Carpet moment

In light of the current economic downturn I was more into the Oscars this year than usual. I got together with a few friends and ate junk food before we rolled up our sleeves to play fashion police. The red carpet went pretty smoothly this year. There weren’t any arrests made but there were a few citations given. Whoopi Goldberg’s leopard print dress probably should have stayed in the jungle where she found it, but then again, she did make an effort and wear a proper dress to the event which was out of her comfort zone, so she still gets an honorable mention.

Now on to the good stuff… Angelina Jolie looked absolutely amazing. Her dress not only suited her perfectly but was a gorgeous piece just on its own. In my book she won best dressed for the evening, hands down. Then there was Penelope Cruz. Even though she did not get my best dressed, she was definitely in the top five. (It was so hard to choose because mostly everyone looked great.) I love Penelope in general because no matter where she gets spotted, she always looks effortlessly elegant, intelligent, sexy and seems to have a deep personality. She had the most endearing acceptance speech and reminded people to never lose their focus when chasing after their dreams. More importantly, it seemed that she was genuinely ecstatic to be honored by her peers. Hats off to you lovely!

Valentine's Day

Today's Annoyance: Valentine’s Day in general

Mantra of the Day: Be happy that you have a Valentine

So this is the deal. I’ve got this quasi boyfriend named Lucky. We used to be a hot and heavy item, but now we could be classified in the "undefined" category. It’s a long story and it’s complicated, so just trust me here. Anyway, yesterday I had this box arrive on my doorstep from France. By the way, Lucky is European royalty, a true prince. Really, I’m not making this shit up. Again, it’s complicated. So I open it up and it is a pre-assembled Lego kit/miniature sculpture thingy in the shape of the Taj Mahal. In the card it said, “This is a monument to our love.”

I think most people would expect that if you date a prince you would get gifts like diamonds, cars, trips… just not a Lego set. Point being, I can’t figure out whether I think this is cute and romantic or childish and a bit lame. Should he live up to the stereotype and bling me out, or be a cute and simple guy? What are your thoughts on the matter? And while you are at it, what is the lamest gift you have ever gotten from that someone special? I am dying to hear your take on this. At the very least, I am sure that at least one of you can make me laugh. Either way, the jury is still out on this one kids…

Bizzzzzzzzz,

Ava
