Introducing "Photo Friday"

Today's Annoyance: Forgetting my camera
Mantra of the Day: A picture is worth a thousand words. Chinese proverb

Is there a better way to start the weekend than viewing a photo that inspires travel and embraces the jet set life? I don't think so. So, here goes. Enjoy!

JSTD: Credit check

"What do you mean you don't take MasterCard?" If you're traveling to a country that you've never visited before, avoid credit card surprises by contacting your hotel and/or the local tourism bureau.

Some credit cards are not widely accepted by vendors in some countries. Also, some countries' ATMs only accept up to 6-digit PIN codes. Potentially adding further hindrance to your spending spree and overall travel experience is the fact that some countries (especially developing countries) have a limited number of ATMs.

Australia vs. Singapore vs. Switzerland

Today's Annoyance: That I can only be in one country at a time
Mantra of the Day: Rome was not built in a day.

Yet again, I know that there are bigger problems in the world, but I can't stop stressing. Australia, Singapore or Switzerland: Where should I go next? I have posed this query on my Facebook page and on Twitter, asking for some guidance, but the comments are so varied that it is confusing me more than helping me. Hopefully, I am not making a mistake by asking more people what I should do next.

It has been a hot minute since my last leisurely trip and I want it to be fabulous...on a budget, of course. Each country has its attributes, but since I haven't visited any of them, I would love to hear why one place should win out over another. Right now, it seems like Switzerland has the slight edge. Then again, I think that maybe it is time to do something that is truly exotic (and yes, make b*tches jealous!).

Send your comments ASAP so that I can start booking. I will keep you posted on what I do next. Toodles!

Choppers rule

Today's Annoyance: Boring modes of travel
Mantra of the Day: Live life above the fray.

Here's a fun thing to do: charter a helicopter. Why, you ask? Because, helicopters kick ass! Enough with the buses, cars, subways and traffic. Soar over it all in a helicopter. You don't have to be rich or famous to charter one. (OK, you do need to have a little bit of money but not THAT much.)

One of my girlfriends and I chartered a helicopter for New Year's Eve in L.A. a few years ago. We popped the cork on a bottle of champagne while the pilot flew us around the city. Cool, huh? Better yet, I can never get enough of the 7-minute flight from Nice airport into Monaco on Heli Air Monaco. Imagine watching the Cote d'Azur whiz by as you quickly make your way into fantasyland. Worth every penny.

Last, but not least, it makes a great story to tell! Try it; you'll like it.

American Idolatry

Today's Annoyance: Why us? Why not me?
Mantra of the Day: If he can do it, I can do it.

So last week, the country chose its latest American Idol. Among all of the pomp and circumstance that surrounds the big finale show, I still cannot get over the number of people who vote to choose the winner of this singing competition. I am not sure how many people typically vote in a U.S. election, but it seems that turnout is just as strong. But, really? There seems to be something inherently wrong with this picture to me. What does that say about the priorities of the "average Joe or Jane" in this country?
I have a feeling that we just place a high priority on entertainment and we always love a good drama that incorporates the quintessential American Dream. Watching normal people from all walks of life coming together to try to make their dreams come true, and pick up a bucket full of cash along the way. Hmmm... I wonder if there is a jet setter equivalent that I could compete for. I think that I'll have to look into that one.

Ta ta, for now!

Airport "expert" lanes

Today's Annoyance: People who overestimate their abilities
Mantra of the Day: Yes, I am an expert traveler.

Ah, yes. The day when the jet set nation can speed through any airport's security lane effortlessly. Could that very day be a reality in the near future? My blogger buddy, Andi of Misadventures with Andi recently took this pic at the Midway Airport in Chicago, IL.

Apparently, it is up to each airport to decide whether or not to adopt the self-select lanes. TSA launched the first self-select lane in Salt Lake City a few years ago and today there are 50 U.S. airports with them. And if the process is moving along slowly in the U.S., I wonder how it's going in other countries (probably faster?).

Out of curiosity, is anyone involved in a registered or preferred traveler program?

Here's a link for you to see if airports in your area have self-select lanes and some instructions on how to be an expert traveler. Whatever you do, don't get in my way at the airport!

Pure Decadence

Today's Annoyance: That I'm not in France right now
Mantra of the Day: The glamorous life was made for me!

Yesterday, I mentioned the Monaco Grand Prix Formula 1 race. In celebration of the Grand Prix this year, there is a three-day event called the "Billionaire Club in Monte Carlo". I won't piss off my source by disclosing the dates and location; all I can say is that if you happen to know about this event, it would be worth it for a jet setter in training to check it out. The people of Monaco certainly know how to put on a party and this one sounds like a doozy, especially since it goes on for 3 DAYS! I haven't partied like that since college. I didn't know that you were still allowed to paint the town red like that after a certain age.

If you're in the south of France (or plan to go within the next day), you can send me an email for some details about the event (ava at avapierce dot com). By the way, I just love this not-so-little emerald...nice touch!!

It's Grand Prix time!

Today's Annoyance: Speed limits
Mantra of the Day: My other car is a Formula 1 race car.

It's that time of year again. Time for the Monaco Grand Prix. Oh...my...stars! I'm not sure that words can explain how fun an event this is. Long story short, I wanted to chuck my career in finance and become a race car driver. The sheer sound and feel of the engines revving as they race through the winding streets of Monaco is unbelievably cool.

Before experiencing the Grand Prix, in no way did I think I'd be a fan of racing. Since attending the test runs with a couple of girlfriends, I've become a true fan of Formula 1. Oh, and did I mention that quite a few of the race car drivers are HOT - Lewis Hamilton, anyone? Hel-lo! Definitely don't knock it 'til you try it. And, if nothing else, there are some way cool people who attend Grand Prix events; the rich and famous, the very handsome, the movers and shakers of business. Not a bad crowd to rub elbows with. So, break out your posh attire, buy some racing headphones and be ready for a career change!

Dress comfortably in dark, lightweight fabrics so that you still look neat, clean and relatively wrinkle-free after long trips. Michael Jackson at O₂ Stadium

Today's Annoyance: That this could be MJ's last hurrah.
Mantra of the Day: His HIStory will live on.

I'm sure that you have heard by now that Michael Jackson is doing a series of concerts this summer in London that will most likely be the last time that he performs for his fans. I am keeping my fingers crossed and hopes up that he will sign some type of Celine-Dion-in-Vegas deal where we can all go see the King of Pop whenever we like, but there is a good chance that this could be it.

With the threat of finality looming on the horizon, I think that I should sneak away from the office for a long weekend to go see the King of Pop. It has long been one of those things that I wanted to do before I kick the bucket.

I have seen his shows on HBO and DVD and they seem like one of the most impressive shows that one can experience. As strange as the man might be, I still love his music. Plus, it is a good excuse to jet over to London. I am a jet setter in training after all. A girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do!

Ava's Faves: Hotel Cap Estel - Côte d'Azur, France

Today's Annoyance: People who take frugal to the extreme
Mantra of the Day: I will host a fabulous event at Cap Estel...soon!

I visited Cap Estel while it was in the midst of being transformed for a very posh wedding. To describe this place as stunning would be doing it a disservice. If I was the bride, I'm not sure I'd choose such a beautiful place because who would really care about me and my dress (oh yeah, and the groom) if I'm getting married in such an extraordinary location?

Whatever the event, whether it's a business meeting, corporate retreat, a pre-engagement dinner or a wedding, if you're looking to persuade someone to say "Yes!", this is the place to do it.

JSTD: Network, network, network

Most people think of business when they hear the word "network" but embracing a jet set lifestyle requires networking on a personal level, too. Thanks to social media, keeping in touch is really easy. Lastly, don't forget to share your resources with others in exchange.

Britain's Got Talent

Today's Annoyance: How many people are supposed to win this show?
Mantra of the Day: Maybe I've got talent, too.

OK, I know this is blasphemous but I am sick of the whole Susan Boyle media circus already. At first, I thought that she had already won Britain's Got Talent when her face was plastered all over international, well, American television but it turns out that she is just a contestant who might not even win in the end.

It seems like every day there is a new contestant who is supposedly blowing Susan Boyle out of the water and giving her a run for her money. Really?

Now, I have to give credit to the guy who won last year. Paul Potts is legitimately talented and I play his CDs during my dinner parties. But is it really a special talent when every day there is another person who is more spectacular than the one before? I don't know, maybe the UK is just trying to make a point that they are cooler than us. I'm not so sure about all of this just yet - we'll have to see what happens tomorrow. That's my rant for today.

More awards for me!

Today's Annoyance: Having limited time and space to thank everyone
Mantra of the Day: I am a bona fide award-winning blogger.

Celebrate good times, come on! I must offer a huge THANK YOU to Andi of Misadventures with Andi who was kind enough and cool enough to send me two awards.

First up is the "Love ya" Award for blogs that are exceedingly charming. These kind bloggers aim to find and be friends. They are not interested in self-aggrandizement. Our hope is that when the ribbons of these prizes are cut, even more friendships are propagated. Please give more attention to these writers. Deliver this award to eight bloggers who must choose eight more and include this cleverly-written text into the body of their award! So, here are my eight:

1. Billionaire Woman
2. Two Jet Set Divas
3. Cupcakes and Cashmere
4. My Melange
5. You Look Fab
6. That's Hideous
7. Because I Could Never Keep Up With a Diary
8. Polichicks

Secondly, Andi awarded me with the Sisterhood Award. The rules are: (1) Put the logo on your blog or post. (2) Nominate up to 10 blogs which show great attitude and/or gratitude! (3) Be sure to link your nominees within your post. (4) Let them know that they have received this award by commenting on their blog. (5) Remember to link to the person from whom you received your award.

I have chosen to pass the award along to:

1. Operation Nice - Melissa's motto is "Encouraging Individuals to be Proactively Nice". Just the idea of her blog makes me feel good.

2. Billionaire Woman - Nathalie is one of the most positive people in the blogosphere (if not the world!).

3. 1,000 Things to be Happy About - As someone who keeps a gratitude journal, I totally love Gretchen's new blog.

4. 10,000 Things to be Happy About - Heather has been blogging since 2006 and still finds things to be grateful for. In my humble opinion, that's pretty inspirational.

5. Girlfriendology - Debba has quickly built an amazing community all about inspiring, appreciating and celebrating friendships. Cool!

Dresses, Skirts & Cuteness

Today's Annoyance: Not having a stylist or access to free clothes
Mantra of the Day: Where there is a will, there is a glamorous way.

As I have mentioned before, the weather is starting to break, people are coming out of hibernation and the social season has begun. Before things kick into full swing, I am trying to get together my wardrobe and the them of my "look" while I still have some free time on my calendar. I know that it doesn't sound like much but really, it is harder getting these things together than it seems.

As always, the fashion world produces some gems as well as a pile of crap. It's difficult to sort through and pick up the things that are going to look good on me, and stay in my budget all while making b*tches jealous! I have been picking my favorite fashion and gossip magazines to sort out my style...not to mention collecting a few things off of NET-A-PORTER when I see a good bargain.

You might be raising your eyebrow at why I would look to gossip mags for fashion advice, but hear me out. There is nothing like a good paparazzi shot of someone walking down the street, at lunch or at a party to have an idea how to translate high fashion into street style. Usually, the mag gives you tips on where to buy affordable versions of the what the stars are wearing. Getting the dirt on the glitterati is not so bad either!

Ava's Faves: La Perla

Today's Annoyance: Uncomfortable and unattractive undergarments
Mantra of the Day: I will not let the wind blow my skirt up to expose my frilly undergarments.

Will the ongoing battle between granny panties and thongs ever be settled? Probably not. Most women's lingerie collections will likely always include a combination of the two. I, for one, am a firm believer in luxe lingerie, whatever the style - be it full brief, thong, boy shorts, high cut or control briefs. My preference may partially result from years of my mom's insistence that I should always "wear the best possible underwear since you never know when you'll be in an accident". Yeah mom, or my guy wants a little more than a kiss goodnight. (wink, wink)

Anyhoo, I'm kinda guessing that the biggest reason for my love of luxe lingerie is that it makes me feel fantastic! Seriously, how could you possibly feel like crap when you're wearing La Perla? Hell, I feel good just looking at my La Perla undies. They're just so......pretty. The Italians know how to do everything just right.

Teen Star Meltdowns

Today's Annoyance: "It" kids with no concept of responsibility
Mantra of the Day: I am channeling my inner "It" kid.

Today, I am trying to get in touch with my inner "it" kid. In some circles (yes, I am trying to be modest here), I am considered to be quite the "it" girl. Well, "'it' woman" is more like it, since I haven't seen my teens or early twenties in quite some time. My guilty pleasure for getting away from the high pressure world of finance is picking up a tabloid on my way home from work. The covers of these things always depict the latest meltdown of some gorgeous young thing with money coming out of his or her ears. Really? I so don't get it. I don't think I have ever awakened in the morning saying "Wow, my life is going about as good as it's ever going to get so why don't I get in my car, crash it, then go drinking until I pass out in the street".

Last year this time, it was Britney Spears; this year, it's Lindsay Lohan (again) and as always, Paris Hilton seems to be in the mix. Paris' former partner-in-crime, Nicole Richie appears to have taken herself out of the equation to live a more grown-up lifestyle. That would be a natural progression if it was all left up to me; chill out and realize that life's pretty good after all.

Putting all of this into words has made me see that people collectively - myself included - do not make that natural progression as often as we should. As long as I have a roof over my head and food on my plate, there is no need for me to complain about the rest of my life, however imperfect it may be.

Ahh, f*ck it! Complaining is much more fun!!

From jet setter to gypsetter

Today's Annoyance: Not getting credit where credit is due
Mantra of the Day: I am the queen of the gypsetters!

As if it's not posh enough to aspire to a jet set life, author Julia Chaplain has described a new class of traveler - the so-called "gypsetter". In her book Gypset Style, Chaplain describes gypsetters as a relatively unknown, exceptionally good-looking group of people who live and work around the globe. They lack the typically stuff attitude that is so often associated with jet setters. Their lives pay homage to the carefree, nomadic style of musicians, designers and artists while enjoying the sophistication of the jet set.

As I learned more about Chaplain's book and this new class of international society, I realized: Oh my god, this book is about ME! Odd that no one called me for a photo shoot. Very odd.

Standing out from the crowd

Today's Annoyance: Anything that's average
Mantra of the Day: Let us not enshrine mediocrity. We must be fabulous...always.

Being average sucks. I mean, isn't the point of many of our day-to-day actions to stand out? Why do people drive flashy cards, get piercings, get good (or bad) grades in school, get tattoos, go to the best universities, wear designer clothes, dress inappropriately, work at the best companies, date/marry the cutest guy/girl, audition for reality TV shows, etc.? It's to stand out from the crowd, of course!

Interestingly, the more we strive to stand out in these ways, the harder it is to stand out. Sometimes, a little creative simplicity goes a long way. Here are 5 things that could definitely make you stand out while you're home or away:

1. Wear a hat. The brighter and bigger, the better. OK, so maybe you don't want to go all Aretha-Franklin-at-the-Presidential-Inauguration flamboyant. But, spring and summer call for cool hats and lots of people don't take advantage of the opportunity. It's time to work the chapeaus, ladies!!

2. Rent a classic car. I got this idea from my fellow bloggers @ Rates to Go who were kind and cool enough to list places around the world to rent the coolest classic cars. How hot would it be to take a drive around town in an awesome classic car like a '57 Chevy or a Jaguar from any year?

3. Rock some cultural attire. During my travels, I have managed to collect some amazing traditional wear - tunics, saris, sarongs, kimonos, etc. On several occasions, I've turned up at a party wearing one of my chic ethnic outfits and easily became the belle of the ball.

4. Go it alone. It's common knowledge that we humans tend to travel in packs, especially women. You'd be surprised at how many more people I meet when I go to events solo. It makes you a bit more approachable for new friends and admirers. Naturally, you want to look your best and be mindful of how much alcohol you consume.

5. Go against the flow. Opt to go for a classic look. Cover your tatts, if possible. Skip the jeans and the whore clothes. (That means, hide your boob and butt cleavage.) That's right. Dress like a lady for once. You'd be surprised at how receptive people will be.

Making the Band 4: Revisited

Daily Annoyance: The drama is over
Mantra of the day: I am channeling my inner diva.

A month or so ago, I told you of my obsession with P. Diddy's Making the Band 4. At first, it was just a passing fancy while I was home sick from work for a couple of days. It turned into a habit that I am somewhat ashamed to admit to now. Alas, I feel that the only way to come to terms with it is to speak openly and honestly about it to you.

The show went from having some serious cat fights to pure drama that was so juicy, it was hard to keep track of. The only good that I can say that I have learned from all of this is that I too should start channeling my inner diva.

At the end of the day, the chicks got ahead because they were not embarrassed to look out for number one or force others to recognize their worth, professionally and personally. They dudes went through their growing pains too, but in the final episode, it was the women that I was really looking out for.

I only say this because as much as I love being a woman I think that collectively, we sometimes forget our true worth. Whether it be in our relationships, getting the salary we deserve or speaking up for ourselves when it comes to things that we want. So, I leave you today saying to channel your inner diva and know that you are worth it!

Flying footwear

Today's Annoyance: Crazy forms of offense
Mantra of the Day: I love my shoes far too much!

I've been reading a few too many stories lately about people (mostly men, I should say) hurling their shoes at politicians. I get that it's supposed to be an insult; really, I get it. But YOU'RE THROWING YOUR SHOES!

Unsurprisingly, few of these shoe throwers are women. Admittedly, I donate some of my shoes to shelters when they're totally outdated and/or slightly worn but to simply throw them at a human being to express my distaste for them? Nah, ain't gonna happen. Why not hurl some snarky words? Or, here's a thought...throw someone else's shoes. How about those ugly shoes that hit the runway each season and turn into never-ending trends...find a cheap knockoff pair and throw those. Even better, throw a pair of Crocs. But for the love of heaven, just don't throw your good shoes! There has got to be another way to insult someone. Maybe we should just go back to burning people in effigy. Any other ideas?

A Song for Your Trouble

Daily Annoyance: People thinking they can buy you off
Mantra of the Day: I should have a celebrity boyfriend.

I have a client who seems to take pride in giving me a hard time and putting me through my paces on a daily basis. Instead of rewarding me with additional assets in a disastrous economic market, he decided to try to buy me off with a pair of tickets to the Robin Thicke/Jennifer Hudson concert.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I procured these tickets in either the midst of a re-gifting process or, no one in his office wanted them; so, he figured that he would pass them onto his favorite whipping boy.

Perhaps I have a little crush on the deliciously fabulous Robin Thicke, but I like to think that I don't go that easily in the sales. The concert was a few nights ago and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. Even though I was a little pissed off as to how I came to have them, I had to let it all go by the time I heard that stylish, sexy man belt out "Lost Without U". He put on a fantastic show that was full of energy, sensuality and fabulousness.

I recommend that you call up your girlfriends and gay boyfriends immediately and arrange a date to see Robin in concert because you will not be disappointed.
